The Wildlife Habitat Policy Research Program (WHPRP) is soliciting Letters of Intent for our competitive awards program. Application for the awards is open to everyone. The WHPRP is a program of the National Council on Science and the Environment (NCSE), an independent, not-for-profit NGO, dedicated to improving the scientific basis for environmental decision-making. The Marine Protected Areas Federal Advisory Committee (MPA FAC) is
currently seeking nominations to fill three vacancies.The MPA FAC was
established to advise the Secretary of Commerce and the Secretary of the
Interior on the development and implementation of a national system of
marine protected areas. The MPA FAC is comprised of a diverse group of
scientists, resource managers and persons representing other interests
or organizations involved with or affected by marine conservation. It
meets twice yearly at coastal locations around the nation.
The MPA FAC is currently seeking nominations representing the interests
and perspectives of:
- recreational fishing
- rural and subsistence users in Alaska
- ocean industry
For more information about the nomination process, the Committee and the
development of the national system of marine protected areas, review the
attached Federal Register notice, and visit the mpa.gov website.
Nominations should be sent to the address below by Friday, July 14,
2006.

The National Science Foundation is again asking for your input on our next
NSF Strategic Plan. Last December, we asked for your thoughts on the
current plan and the changing environment for science and engineering (S&E)
research and education. That input, together with comments from NSF staff,
our Advisory Committees, and the National Science Board (NSB) led to
development of the draft plan now available for
review by the public at large and the communities we serve. The draft FY
2006-2011 Strategic Plan communicates NSF's vision, goals, objectives,
priorities, and strategies over this time period.

Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival in Homer, AK.
This festival will be will be held with Dr. Bernd
Heinrich as keynote speaker. Dr. Heinrich is the author of numerous
scientific publications and several books on birds, including Ravens in
Winter, Mind of the Raven, The Winter World and The Geese of Beaver Bog. His presentation will be on "The Behavioral Biology of Ravens, the Wolf-Bird". There will many fun and educational birding opportunities
with presentations, workshops, field trips, boat tours, art events,
children's activities and entertainment.

One year anniversary of the Seledang Ayu grounding off of Unalaska.
Progress to date since the grounding (9/05):
- U.S. Coast Guard and State of Alaska agreement to conduct the Aleutian Islands Vessel Traffic Risk Assessment.
- Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund (OSLTF) has been reauthorized - tax reinstituted/ cap raised to $2.7 billion.
- Initial component of vessel tracking system installed at Unimak Pass - Automatic Identification System (AIS).
- Missile Defense Agency's new tug "Dove" to be at Adak may be assigned emergency response in central Aleutians.
- Greater awareness of the risks of vessel traffic in the Southern Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands.
Though much progress has been made since the grounding, there is still much to be done to work towards safer shipping in the North Pacific. North Pacific Shipping Safety Forum in Seattle, Washington. From 7-9pm hosted at the Mountaineers meeting space in downtown Seattle at 300 3rd Avenue West (Room location to be announced).
The forum, co-sponsored by People for Puget Sound, Ocean Advocates, Shipping Safety Partnership, Alaska Oceans Program, University of Alaska Marine Advisory Program and others is being hosted following the one year anniversary of the Selendang Ayu grounding to inform the public and various interest groups of shipping risks in Puget Sound and across the North Pacific. The goal of the forum is to identify and discuss potential measures to enhance the safety of shipping, reduce the risks of shipping disasters in our common waters and provide an opportunity in which the public and various interest groups can infuse their thoughts, concerns, and ideas.
